Valse Lento

For over 20 years the relationship between the visual Arts, Western art music, and avant-garde sounds has provided the main inspiration and motivation for the visual and performative work of artist Hallveig Agustsdottir. This has led her to explore various mediums, such as (sound)drawing, painting, video compositions, and photography.

When coming across the piano piece Valse Lento op 2, nr. 1, by the Icelandic composer Jón Leifs (1899 – 1968) in her studio this summer, Hallveig found herself revisiting an analytical method she developed several years back. In this method, she transforms an existing musical composition into mathematically arranged colour fields. The title of the piece is not only on the list of her favourite piano compositions but also has another meaningful resonance with Hallveig: the feeling that we need to cultivate more slowness in our lives. Within this idea, playing and practicing a slow waltz seems appropriate.

At the Galerie 19 exhibition, Hallveig will be showing a selection from a growing collection of works on paper and paintings based on the interpretation of Valse Lento.
